Tokyo is the most expensive city in the world. The recent statistics shows that capital of Japan, Tokyo is the most expensive place in the world to live. Japan is the second strongest economy in the world, but the most expensive.
One reason for this high expense is the highest living standards by its citizens. The quality of life is also high in Tokyo. Everything contributes to the expenses.
From the last one year living experience in Japan, let me brief the costs of living in Tokyo. The apartment rent per month is 115,000 Japanese yen. For Yahoo BB broadband internet connection with a land phone the bill be around 6,400 Japanese yen. It is quite reasonable considering the quality of service Yahoo BB offers and the advantages of having a landline telephone from Yahoo BB in combination with Apa Kabar international calling card.
The monthly electricity bill will be around 6000 Japanese yen. I paid the last water bill approximately 3600 Japanese yen for two months. So, monthly 1800 Yen is nominal for a single man. The gas bill will be around 1600 Yen, because I don’t cook at home. This gas consumption is for heating the water for making coffee and water heating for bathing. The NHK television bill will be 1390 Yen per month. Softbank mobile phone charges for a month is around 2000 Yen. This includes the extra calls I make to friends within Japan. For making international calls I use Apa kabar card which costs 2400 Yen. I have to buy at least 3 Apa Kabar cards in a month, thus this amounts to 7200 Yen per month.
Daily commutation charges by train to office and back will be 580 Yen per day. So accumulated for a month and also including the extra travels I make to visit friends and for purchase will total to 20,000 Yen. This kind of expense depends on the place where we live. For others, this amount may be less or high.
For food and snacks monthly approximate expense for a single head will vary from 45000 to 60,000. If I go for eating out together with other friends once in a week, this amount will go further high.
Hair dressing charges are quite noticeable in Japan. My hair dresser charges me with a small bill of 3,000 Yen. This is where I got astonished with the living expenses in Tokyo. Every month I pay 3,000 Yen for hair cutting. I am not going for any beautification of my hair! In my country, for this amount of money, even if I go for a medium luxury hair saloon, I can have my hair cut for full two years! Here in Tokyo, we are not paying for the actual work he does rather we pay the hair dresser to live in Tokyo. He has to live in Tokyo in order to render his service to us!
The clothing and physical fitness charges will vary according to the individual and I don’t want to put any amount, but it won’t be less than 10,000 Yen if we take the average per month.
Then there are vacation expenses for a foreigner. Entertainment expenses another category. Today I went to see a movie. One movie ticket costs 1800 Yen.
Since I have insurance, I have to pay some 30% of the expenses. Monthly medical expenses are approximately 5000 Yen.
Living with family and kids is quite highly expensive in Japan. The lowest international school fee won’t be less than 60,000 Yen per month for one kid. The school bus expense may vary from 20,000 Yen and more. Then comes the other education expenses separately.
All the above mentioned expenses are purely from my own experience and have nothing to do with a national average figure. I don’t want to do a totaling of all the expenses and state a particular amount as the monthly expenses. Some companies will take care of some type of expenses. Again that depends on the individuals agreement with the company and company's commitment to the employees. Therefore Just I have given the breakups of living expenses in Tokyo. There are other types of expenses, which I might have missed out. I will update once I remember those expenses.

Wow, you are posting almost every day! That is great.
ReplyDeleteThe cost for cutting hair for a woman (just cutting) seems to be same everywhere in Japan. I have lived in Tokyo, Tsukuba, and now Akita, and it is somewhere around 4500-5000 Yen. The cost of living is not that high in Akita, but apparently there is no significant difference in the cost of hair-cutting as compared to Tokyo. Your post really made me think about this. Thanks.
Konichiwa, Jayaprakash san!
ReplyDeleteBut seriously, I am from Kerala, and have lived in the United States for 30 years.
Re.phone call costs.. gave you tried any of the Internet based phone services? Vonage, Skype? There is one called Magic Jack, a small attachment( you can buy at places such as Radio Shack, other electronics stores)that allows you to make calls over the internet at basically local rates.
I recall staying for a few months in Osaka, Nagoya and Washimiya, in the mid 90's when the Yen was very strong..as much as 80 yen to a US $.. and things were awfully expensive.
I also recall it was difficult to get honest feedback from my customers, in the beginning, but once you break down a few walls, it did not seem to be a issue. I recall asking my teams there to give me feedback in ' Honne', not 'Tatemae' .. and they immediately responded!
Thanks Manisha-san and Boston-san for your valuable inputs.
ReplyDeleteTo Manisha-san: There are hair dressing saloons charging 1000 Yen also in Tokyo. They are the cheapest ones. The problem is they are very fast and many times we won't look like earlier once we come out! That may be my fear on the cheaper (!) services.
3000 Yen is reasonaby justified in Tokyo. My hair dresser Takagawa-san is very friendly to me and we will have chat during the process. Me with broken Japanese could communicate with him. That makes me confident in him that he won't make my hair like iron dust attracted to the magnet!
To Boston-san: Konnichiwa! Thanks for your suggestions. I will try as you told. I use Apa kabar card which gives me 12 hours 13 minutes calling time to India for 2400 Yen. This means around 3.27 Yen per minute. So far I know, this damn cheap. The card is easily available near to the Namaste foods shop in Higashi Ojima.
Thanks JayaPrakash for such a detail description of monthly expenses.
ReplyDeleteI am an Engineer from India, and got an offer from a Japanese company. If would be a great help if you can provide/post a rough of initial setup cost for a new family (no child).
BTW what my office would be in Tokyo considering that what should be a decent salary.
Hi Hitesh,
ReplyDeleteCongrats for your new assignment with a Japanese company. The salary structure in a Japanese company will be based on the Japanese standards of age and qualification based. But there are multinational companies from USA, Europe and even India (mainly software), who offers pretty much higher salary than Japanese companies. I don't know what is your age; the salary level in a Japanese company depends on the age. A 35-38years age group may earn a gross salary of something in between 700,000 to 800,000 JPY per month, if my experience is correct. I am not sure of this amount with multinational companies. I heard it is a bit higher than 1 million JPY per month.
If you live without children, a family expense of 150,000 JPY per month should be OK for you, provided your commutation expenses, 80% of the house rent, 70% of health insurance (guaranteed if you live in Japan) etc are covered by the company). The bonus usually 3 to 4 months of salary per annum will be distributed in two instalments on June and December. That bonus will be an extra savings for many foreigners and is a good amount.
Since I live with family from April onwards, I will update this blog with the new expenses and sources for Indian food items in Tokyo.
Please ask if you have any doubts.
Thanks JayaPrakash for such quick reply.
ReplyDeleteActually its a long term assignment company will not be providing me any accommodation or benefit related to it. :(
I am under 30.
Any rough estimates abt the amount needed for the initial setup...
like security deposit (for house), furniture, and other cost....
Thanks...
Hi Hitesh,
ReplyDeleteHouse rent in Tokyo is quite high compared to other major cities. In my case, I live in Higashi Ojima, which is approximately 25 minutes travel time from my office by trains. Indian community is considerable at places like Higashi Ojima, Nishi Kasai etc. Rent for my home is 115,000 JPY per month. As I told before, I live with my family and mother (Interestingly 'mother is not considered as part of family' in Japan!!).
The house rent for bachelor accommodation will be less than 100,000 JPY in Tokyo. If you opt to live a little away, the rent will be less. For bachelors who shares the accommodation for initial days of setup in Japan, there are agencies who help to get shared accommodation. My bachelor friends who rented a single room with all other facilities like kitchen, bathroom, toilet individually pays something around75,000 to 90,000 JPY near Tokyo. There are shared accommodation available for 30,000 to 60,000 JPY per month. Check out for all the facilities they provide before you decide to move in.
Since the company did enter into contract with the property dealer for renting the home for me, I am not sure how much they paid to the agent and owner. Information from other friends say the security deposit including advance rent for the first month will be 2 or 3 months rent, The key money will be 1-2 months rent and the Agents commission will be 1 month's rent.
Please tell your employer to help in arranging for the accommodation as for many foreigners without knowledge of Japanese language it will be a nightmare to deal with house owner.
There are some useful tips at this site. http://www.paperlantern.net/acomo/apart.html
Thanks Jayaprakash for your help. We will meet some time down the line ... :)
ReplyDeleteKeep blogging :)
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteI´m working in a lifestyle magazine, and for October issue I want to write about the cost of living in Tokyo. So I need some more informations from you. Do you mind? Can I reach you personally via email? You can confirm directly to my email address k_marisa_y@yahoo.com
Thanks so much before.
Hi Marisa,
ReplyDeleteAs assured, I will be providing you enough information on the cost of living in Tokyo. It may take one or two days to compile the information, but you will receive it.
Okay, thanks so much for the effort. I'll be waiting.
ReplyDeleteAs we are going through your blog we came to know that the tokyo is very expensive. But as compare to the Indian rs. how the money will be saved? This we are written because we planned to come there for teaching Indian classical vocal and instrumental music and also drama with yoga. The age group is in btn 35 to 45yrs. So what are the salaries the school pay to the teacher approximately to mate these expences and how we can save the money? Dhanashree Sunil Ashtekar from Mumbai.
ReplyDeleteHi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteYou have provided a handful of information on the living expenses in Tokyo. I know this is one side of Tokyo only. There might be other areas of expenses, which you might not have experienced. Ofcourse, over a period of one and half you might not have gone through all kind of expenses. Since I have lived there for almost twelve years and now back to US, I know what you have written is true information.
The salary you get also in tune with the expenses, I am sure!!!!!!!
Good luck to your blog postings.
Hello Jayasan,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is great information source for foreigners living in Japan. I see you give more information through your blog and try to solve their specific doubts also. It is a good help for them. Even for Japanese people, Tokyo is expensive.
But there are many options to buy things at lower cost here in Tokyo also. Probably after learning Japanese language and start talking in Japanese, you can find such cheaper sources of buying things in Japan.
Thanks for sharing
If Tokyo is this much expensive how people live there? May be the salary is also much higher. so the total living standard must be higher. Life of a foreigner in Tokyo must be an enjoying one then!
ReplyDeleteIf you get more salary, there will be equal cost of living also in Tokyo. That is quite natural. Compared to other neighboring countries, Japan economy is much much stronger and higher. Cost of living in Tokyo is proportional to the salary people draw from the companies.
So, thinking from this point of view I don't think Tokyo is expensive.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I had never seen a blog by an Indian with such a detail about CoL in a foriegn country! Thanks....
I might be moving to Tokyo soon. Can you please clarify following things
1. Average Monthly expense for a couple ( no kids ) towards Grocery and Household items ( Soaps/Detergent etc )
2. Meal cost for two in an Indian Restaurant
3. Cable TV cost ( Do we get Indian channels or atleast English Channels [ NGC, Discovery,BBC,CNN etc ] )
4. Is Insurance covered by Government? If so, what is the premium. Does it cover Pregnancy related charges also
Thanks
AP
Dear AP,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan!
The expensese written here are for a family with a kid going to Indian international school. While I was a bachelor and living in a company provided free accommodation, my average expense per month was around 100,000 Japanese Yen. As a single I think this was a bit higher as I heard from my other friends. When I was single, I used to go out and eat out frequently with my friends. That was one of the reasons for higher expense.
Your case is specific. Let me assume with some inputs from Indian friends having similar situation, that the expenses will be around 150,000 per month. Please note that I haven't added the rent and travelling expenses. Those things depend on your actual plan. If your employer supports for those two things, you can save a lot. Naturally, many of the new comers from India selects such areas of Tokyo where Indian people live. This will help them to reduce the cost of living as the old people will give inputs on where to go for shopping and outing with saving in mind.
Meal cost in a Indian restaurant for a single will be around 1200Yen. This may be the basic items like one naan and one curry with a softdrink. It varies from restaurant to restaurant.
Health insurance is covered in the national health insurance scheme. We need to pay 30% of the medical expenses at hospitals, clinics and medical stores.
Cable TV is available, but unfortunately not many Indian channels. We have not tried so far to get an Indian Channel through cable TV. If you want I will ask some of the experienced Indian friends.
Ask more if you want more information. Once again welcome to Japan.
Hi ,
ReplyDeleteI have been offered a job in Japan . I have gone thru your blog and it is really very very helpful in estimating what the likely expenses will be for a foreigner in Japan. I will be moving with my wife and 3 year old kid. I may be located in Fukushima prefecture. Would it be possible for you to let me know if there are any International schools in that region. I understand that it is difficult to travel between Tokyo and Iwaki or Koriyama on a daily basis due to the distance factor. Are there any Indians in that area?
Dear jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteIam a phd student in iisc, bangalore. iam trying for post doc in university of tsukuba. i would like to know the approximate (worst case) living expense in tsukuba which includes rent, food, elec\water, tax etc.I would like to figure out the amount i can save from a monthly offered salary of approx.245000 yen.
Hi Riddhi,
ReplyDeleteI am not familiar with Fukushima. There are Indians living in Fukushima prefecture. Sorry for my inability to help you, but you may please check this link; http://www.worldvillage.org/e_index.html
Regards
Jayaprakash
Hi Hari,
ReplyDeleteLet me tell you frankly that for a PhD holder looking for a post doc, 245,000 Yen per month is very low.
Of course, with that amount, you can live in Tsukuba. If you cook yourself and share the accommodation with other friends, you can save a some money too. There may be people in Tsukuba univ. same as you, who may be getting much more than you. Later you should not feel anything bad about it. The offered salary is much low for sure.
You might have noticed the first comment on this post from Mrs Manisha Kundu Nagata. She is a scientist and was doing her research in Tsukuba. The offered salary of 245,000 Yen per month is suitable for a student researcher. For a PhD holder, it is much less. Something around 360,000 Yen per month should be OK for you.
Hope you understand. Finally it is upto you. If you have time to look for more options in Tokyo, seek for a better package.
Thanks a lot for the advise.....i will update you the status.....
ReplyDeleteHi jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your response. In one of your earlier blogs you had mentioned that for the age group 35-38 a monthly salary of 700,000-800,000 JPY can be expected. Is this a very high salary level or mediocre salary level? Also would it be possible for you to let me know what are the Income tax rates from salary. You may also write to me at my personal id riddhi.neshika@gmail.com . Thanks again
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteI have an offer to do Ph.D in TPU at Atsugi, they offered 2,40,000YEN primarily, this is incliding 40,000 YEN house rent allowance. Now they are saying that they are saying that there is no house allowance. So, i will get only 1,90,000 YEN/month. Can you please tell me is this amount is enough to live?? and also i have a plan to bring my wife and kid(4year) in the next academic year(2011).
What is the total expenses for me(single) and what is the total expenses for my dependents(wife and kid) which includes, food, water, electricity, gas, kid's school fee, rent etc.?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings
Rao.
Hi All,
ReplyDeleteThis page is a must for any Indian travelling to Tokyo.
So much information with clear details. Thanks a lot all of you.
Now, for an IT professional, whats an Average Yearly Compensation ? (Main Salary only [Not Including Bonus])
Also, Considering about 6 Million Yen Salary, can a Average living Indian couple consider a long term stay in Tokyo ?
Thanks
SG
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteSince you are living near the India International school, let me ask this! How much would be the approx rent for a 1LDK apartment in Nishi Ojima area? Would it be easily available? Whom should I contact?
Your response will be deeply appreciated.
Mr Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sharing these info.. these are very helpful to me. i'm planning to go to Japan. I fear only about the food comparability for Indians. It would be so great if you could explain about it. Thank you
Hi Mr. Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteCould you please advice about the food compatibility for Indians. Im from Tamilnadu
Hi Jayaprakash
ReplyDeletePresenty i am working in Bangalore, but now i got offer in Japan with a salary of 550000Yen, for myself and wife how much exp will come monthly... or how much i can save money monthly.
Kiran
Hi Kiran,
ReplyDeleteIs it going to be your gross salary? As I wrote in the post, the house rent is a major part. If the company support is available for House rent, that would be fine. Excluding house rent and tax, the monthly expense for two will be around 150,000 to 200,000 Yen per month for an average living. If you maintain car, have lot of friends attending parties, inviting friends, going out to see places frequently, then you may have to save a lot from the salary. Salary in Japan depends on many factors like age, experience etc. By the way, I heard from friends also that IT professionals earn a good salary in Japan.
Savings in Japan is possible and there are many ways to reduce the cost of living for daily living in Japan. Congrats for the new assignment!
Hi JP & other freinds, Wish you all a very happy new year. I am from Mumbai, India & I got a job offer from a Japanese engineering company in Yokohama. ReplyDeleteBest Regards,
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteWish you happy new year 2011.
Recently I got offer from a Japanese engineering company in Tokyo. I am 34 years old and by profession I am Mechanical engineer. They offered me around 256,000 yen (after deducting tax etc.). Accomodaion with utility, Tax, health insurance and commuting allowance is paid by company. I am planning to move along with my family (wife and 2 daughters aged 4.5 years & 1.5 years). I have to take care about education of my elder daughter. Can you please tell me whether above mentioned salary is OK? Will I be able to save some money?
Best Regards,
Hi RK,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all a big sorry for the delay in reply. Hope you might have read the post carefully. The living expense in Tokyo is higher and I feel if you send your daughter to school, you may feel a bit tight in the budget with that amount. The school fee itself at Indian schools are around 60,000 JPY and the bus fee is 15,000 JPY per month.
The good news is there is one more school coming in Funabori, which I heard the fee will be much lesser than other two Indian schools. Congrats to your new assignment.
Hello Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThis is ashwani, basically from punjab india, I have completed by B.tech in 2004, I am single(age 28),Right now i am working in hongkong from last one year as senior software engineer, I have around 07 year of experience in Oracle forms/Reports/EBS/Pl/sql. Presently I am getting HKD 25000 per month + free medical, that is equivalent to JPY 250000 per month. I am able to save around HKD 16000 per month.
Actually from few days I am in process with some IT company from japan, they are interested to hire me. Location is tokyo japan, and may be some client location. Right now in hongkong, I want to ask you, how much i should ask my new employer that covers all cost and I can save around HKD 16000 or JPY 160000, if company doesnot provide any apartment or any thing else....and pelase tell me, there is indian food availabilty and cost, if I cook at home as well.
Thanks in advance,
Ashwani
In continuation to my earlier query...
ReplyDeleteThis is ashwani again...I just confirmed from my new employer that they will not provide me accomodation, but they will give me medical
insurance..more over my work location willl be : Fuchu and how far it is from : Azabu Dai, I enquired abt tax, she said 5% is a tax rate.
Is it true ??
Hi Ashwani, I am sorry for the late reply. If you are a bachelor, the cost of living in Tokyo will be around 100,000 per month without accommodation. This was my experience, when I stayed a few months in Tokyo as a married bachelor. The accommodation was provided by the company. If you are looking for a single room accommodation, it may cost you around 80,000 JPY per month. If you go for shared accommodation, the rent will come down, but you need to find partners. There are Indian communities in Tokyo.
ReplyDeleteThe story of cost of living in Tokyo changed totally after my family arrived. It is quite natural. Currently, our average living cost, including accommodation, child's education etc is around 450,000 JPY per month. The most part goes to the accommodation - 120,000 JPY per month, child's school fee+ extra curricular activities - an average 80,000 JPY per month. We don't travel much as we have a small kid. If you travel a lot, then the expense will shoot up.
Medical is 70% free in Japan. We need to pay 30% for the adults. Regarding tax, it depends on the salary. I was not much bothered about how much percentage is deducted for tax till now to be frank with you, but it must be more than 20% in my case. I will check and tell you exact percentage.
I could not find Azabu Dai station, but Fuchu to Azabu Juban is more than 67 minutes train journey and it will cost you 480 JPY. So daily 960 JPY for travel to office.
Generally, around 80% of the accommodation and full travel expenses will be taken care by the company if you work for a Japanese company. My conclusion is if you are a bachelor and if you get something around 400,000 JPY per month, you can save more than 160,000 JPY per month. There are many hidden expenses like going once in year to your home, going to places, eating out etc, but those expenses depend on person to person. If you can reduce the expense, you can save more and the target salary can be brought down, but always try to negotiate for more as you already have a job in hand.
Hope this will be of helpful to you.
Hi Jayaprakash
ReplyDeleteWell you had posted very valuable info on this blog. I am from India. I got an offer from Japanese Shipping company to work with them in Tokyo. I am touching 30 but bachelor. You had advised in your blog various time, rent is the major expense to live in Tokyo but for me my company is going to provide me individual accommodation with all basic requirement(like washing machine, heating appliance etc) more over i will get daily commuting charges upto office from my company. But i wanna repeat same question from which you had gone thru' various times what would be the normal / average living expenses for single head. My earning would be 40,0000 jpy i can do saving of 20,0000 jpy as per my employers i have to pay income tax, and medi-claim insurance rest house + travelling expenses will be borne by my employers. please to see your valuable advise.

Hello Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteTruly a wonderful blog! It was probably the most helpful thing I've ever read about Japan! Thank you.
I do have a question. I am going to be a transfer student in Nara starting next week with a monthly scholarship of 80.000JPY. My hostel's rent is 35.000JPY and my internet is 2000JPY. I won't be having any travel expenses since my college is right behind the hostel, but my question is whether I would be able to cover all living expenses - water, gas, electricity and food with just the remaining 43.000JPY. I know life in Nara is not as expensive as life in Tokyo, but I am worried. The woman from the college administration said something about my water, gas and electricity bills being around 35.000JPY but leaves only 10.000JPY for food. Am I going to starve till death? o.O''''
Thank you very much
Best regards

Nice Thread. Just to be updated I have a query, I have an onsite opportunity from India to Tokyo, in which the company offers me Lodging + offers me a daily allowance of 100$. Is that enough to be able to live semi-lavishly and also save some dollars for back home ?

ReplyDeleteWill be coming to Japan for masters scholarship at Yokohama-They have provided accommodation and medical cover. They have on top offered me 190,000 JPY. How much I'm i likely to save
I just posted asking of how much I'm likely to safe while living in YOKOHAMA
ReplyDeleteHi JP,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is really very informative. I have also a similar query for another city Kobe. How much I need to pay for accommodation and food (considering I am vegetarian). I am coming there with my wife. Please help me in getting some estimate of expenses I need to make to live a decent life.
Thanks & Regards
Friends, my apologies......could not update the blog for quite a long time..
ReplyDeleteHi Himanshu, since you are a bachelor, your employers had done justice fairly to say on your savings. That might be correct estimation for a bachelor life in Tokyo. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Revia. I am not sure about the expenses in Nara, but better you should talk with the authorities who take care of your transfer to Nara.
ReplyDeleteHi Pawan. Good luck to your new assignment. Since the Japanese yen is strong against US dollar, monthly income may be around 440,000 JPY. Please ask, what else your employers will provide such as transportation, accommodation support etc.
ReplyDeleteHi Silent Priest, Good luck to your new assignment. As I have written in earlier posts, the living cost and therefore savings in Tokyo depend on the way we live. Since the Japanese Yen is strong against US dollar, daily allowance of $100 may not look attractive if you have family. If you are a bachelor, that amount should be fine.
ReplyDeleteHi anonymous, Since you are coming for study purpose, let me guess you will be single. If accommodation is provided, you may be able to save some amount from whay you get in hand. It all depend on how you are going to restrict yourselves from expenses. If you do not go much to see the places and parties with friends, you can increase your savings.
ReplyDeleteHi unknown, Since you are vegetarian, you may be cooking at home by yourself and if you do not eat much from restaurants, you may be able to increase your saving potential. I am not familiar with the expenses in Kobe. For other type of general expenses that are common in Kobe and Tokyo I recommend to go through the post and previous comments and replies. Congrats to your new assignment.
ReplyDeletehello sir.. am doing final year in Engineering.. i got a job offer from NIT Tokyo.. they are offering 2,500,500 jpy/annum + company benefits.. wat am i supposed to do?? am confused plz help
ReplyDeleteHi Anitha, I have written in the post and replies to the comments about the kind of expenses and cost for living in Tokyo based on my experience. I think you can make an estimate of expenses from there and correlate with that of yours. As I told, the salary in many of the traditional Japanese companies is based on age. If the house rent and transportation are paid by the company, the major expense remaining is for food and utility bills say for example to the maximum of 100,000 JPY/month. What about the annual tickets and vacation?
ReplyDeleteHi Jay Sir,
ReplyDeleteHow are you?...Your comments are really very helpfull for everyone coming to Japan.
I am also coming to Japan (Tokyo) for a month, i want to know the food expenses per day, as my accomodation is already done. Can you please help me in that????...
And one more thing i am coming from Hanenda airport n will be going to hotel at Hamacho, Nihombashi area, what are the ways to go Nihombashi from airport and how much it costs approx????...
Thanks for all your valuable posts.
Regards
Aziz
Honestly,
ReplyDeleteto have a studio in Manhattan (not even a real apartment with a bedroom+a livingroom) you need at least $2000 per month, and the hairdresser charges at least $100.
Thus I think Manhattan has far higher living expenses.
Hey Jay,
ReplyDeleteMukesh Here. Jay, I am 21 only now I have been offered a job of MANAGER-Opeartions at UNIQLO(U must be aware of the company)with a package of 210000 JPY + Bonus(twice a year)by the Company excluding Housing allowance, commuting aloowance and flight cost allowance. These three expenses are to be born by the company. Plus there are Overtime allowance too (beyond 8 hours a day).
Please, tell me, how much i would be able to save to remit the savings to my family in INDIA(I can cook myself & I don't like to waste my money on unproductive expenses). My approximate salary per month would be 250000 JPY including overtime allowance.
Hi Aziz,
ReplyDeleteSorry for my late reply. Generally we use the Jorudan train route finder to find the best way to travel by train, the link of which is given below;
http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/norikae/
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your valuable inputs. That is too high expense in Manhattan.
Hi Mukesh,
ReplyDeleteCongrats for your new assignment and welcome to Japan! I think you can easily save INR 100,000+. Bonus will be an extra.
Hello Jay,
ReplyDelete1. I am getting an offer of 10 million JPY per annum. I came to know that 33% would be taxes. This comes to about 6.5 million JPY per annum in hand salary.
2. Also, as per your experience, the cost figures amount to approx 2424000 JPY per annum expenses (figures are of 2009) so may be the cost of living is bit higher now.
3. Are there any hidden costs which I must consider? Should I also negotiate to include allowance, commuting aloowance and flight cost allowance etc?
I have a total of 11 years of experience. Is it a lucrative offer to accept?
Hi anonymous, Congrats for your new assignment and welcome to Japan!
ReplyDeleteWhat other benefits do they offer? Accommodation, Bonus, commutation, flight ticket to back home etc..
As a general rule, if you are bachelor, your savings could be be more than 40% of the gross salary. Are you a bachelor?
Considering the years of experience, it this is from a Japanese firm, offer is an attractive one.
hello again Jay,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your prompt feedback :)
In continutation of my comment posted on Nov 30, 2011....My name is Anshu! :)
Its not a Japanese firm but a French one which has one of its big entities in Japan.
The whole package was proposed at 10 million JPY as of now. Bonus might be extra on this but as of now that is yet to be discussed. Accomodation, communtation and everything else is not separately mentioned and is included as part of this whole package. Should I negotiate for it further?
Is there a possibility of asking for relocation benefits also?
I am married female and my husband will plan to shift later to Japan next year. As of now, nothing is decided. He may be on dependent visa or may find a suitable job.
What is that you suggest me considering these factors?
Rgds,
Anshu
Hello Anshu,
ReplyDeleteGlad to know you! The offer is a good. Everything should be negotiated and clarified before joining especially in Japan. Further negotiation will be difficult after joining. Ask about Bonus also.
Generally in Japanese firms, it is distributed twice in a year and it is the most attractive part of the salary package. Many of the non-Japanese firms do not pay Bonus. So, it is better to make things clear. You can tell the reference of Japanese firms while asking for Bonus.
Relocation benefits are also up to the negotiation. You may not need to bring heavy household items from India (in my case) to Japan! If you are working in a place far away from your native place and have to leave that place to come to Japan, your new company should assist for relocation. That is the general practice but there may not be any rule. This also you can ask the company.
Also ask about the yearly vacation package. Some companies pay, but not necessarily followed by all.
Which is the location of your future office? You may need to give more attention to choose the right location convenient to attend the office and access food items preferred by foreigners in Japan (mainly Costco) on a later stage.
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your such a quick reply! It is indeed very helpful that I am getting a clear idea what to ask for.
The location of office is Tokyo, Shirokane.
I will ask for Relocation benefits as I am currently in Bangalore and my native is far away from here in Northern part of India. I will negotiate.
What should I tell as refernce of Japanese firms regarding Bonus payment? Can you clear that a bit more...? Also please give more info on vacation package?
Regards,
Anshu
Japanese firms pay bonus twice in a year. It depends on company's performance of course. Generally speaking the bonus amount in a year total will come between 4 to 6 months Basic salary. This will be the biggest saving one can make by working in a Japanese company. Compared to other multinational companies in Japan, salary in Japanese firms are less. That will be compensated through this bonus system.
ReplyDeleteMany foreigners are not aware of this bonus system in Japan and after joining, they feel bad when their colleagues (both Japanese and some foreigners) get bonus on June and December. So it is better to get clarified from your employer whether they have bonus system or not. If they don't practice bonus system and instead pay it with the salary to make the monthly gross salary bigger it might be common for all employees.
Since you are from India, you can ask for yearly ticket reimbursement to your native place. Most Japanese companies pay for at least ticket to the individual if not for the whole family. As far as I know, there is no paid vacation package as seen in the Middle East countries.
Shirokane is just 18 minutes from the central Tokyo. You can use the Tokyo Transfer guide to find out commutation charges to any station. The link is given below;
http://www.tokyo-subway.net/english/index.html
Hey Jay, Sudhir here from INDIA, m 23 and bachelor.
ReplyDeleteMany Many thanks for your valuable answers.
Jay, i would like to know about the tax rates that would be deducted from my salary.
Bro. m offered a package of 200000 JPY + Bonus twice a year. The company is also providing me 100% accomodation, commuting allowance and two way flight cost allowance for home.
In your views, how much JPY can I Save per month to remit to my family in India. (I can cook food for myself)
Thanks
Hi Sudhir,
ReplyDeleteCongrats for your new assignment and welcome to Japan.
You must be able to save near to Rs 1 lakh per month. The current exchange rate is approx. 1.5 JPY for 1 Rs. Bonus will be an extra saving which will be a good amount. Enjoy your stay in Japan!
Hello Jayaprakash, I am Dr Saravanan from Tamil nadu, India, docterate in Biochemistry. I am coming to japan in April 2012. I am going to stay there for six months. I am going to stay at Nishinomiya, Hyogo, 663-8143. I will be happy if you tell the fact about the radiation hazard there. Thanking you.
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteGlad to know you. Nishinomiya in Hyogo is far away from the troubled nuclear reactors and hence it is absolutely risk-free to come and stay there. Even the air radiation levels in Tokyo are safer, a reason why we are still here.
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is great...
I am working in India and my current salary is INR 1600000 after tax.
The parent company is in Japan and I am offered a 3 year position in Japan. What salary should I ask them? In case the company gives accomodation and in case it does not.
I company office is in Nihonbashi and I would be coming with my wife and two kids. The two kids would study in Indian school.
Please help me.. since I have to confirm my HR tomorrow so this is little urgent.
Thanks a lot
Amit
Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Amit. I have applied for an internal expat position in a Japanese Company nased in Nihonbashi, Tokyo. I am currently in India and my annual salary is approx INR 1600000 after tax.
What salary should I ask my host company in Japan? I am married with two school going kids and they would be accompaning me. Please help me with both the figures assuming they give me accomodation and travel to office and assuming that they dont give me these.
Please help as I have to make a quick decision and inform them.
Thanks a lot for the wonderful blog.
Regards,
Amit
Hello Amit,
ReplyDeleteGlad to know you.
Almost all Japanese companies have their internal rules for hiring people from overseas and a fixed salary structure based on age and to some extent demand.
To be frank, your question is too difficult to answer. It is an individual's decision that at which level of salary he will be satisfied. But from the expense point of view I can give you some clue based on which you can decide. The Indian school fee for one child is 750,000 Yen per year including the school bus charges. There will be a discount for the second child, but it is up to the Principal's decision. Let us consider the full tuition fee for the second child also. So on an average for two children monthly tuition will be 125,000 JPY.
Average living cost with two children might be around 200,000 JPY per month for a family. Other extra traveling charges are not considered here. It depends on individuals.
House rent could be something around 150,000 JPY or a bit more per month if you plan to take a house near to Indian school (I suggest to take near Indian school as Nihonbashi is easily accessible by train for you). The daily commutation charges will be around 600 JPY and of course it depends on where you would like to stay. Generally Japanese companies pay all these expenses and they pay approx. 80 % of the house rent too.
Hope the above with other comments in this section will help you take a decision. Today I have prepared another post on savings. Please read that also.
Please feel free to contact if you want to know more. Best of luck!
hi here govind from india..
ReplyDeletei m offered a salary of 125000 yen per month + accomodation + lunch in gitanjali gems , tokyo. Is that enough to save Rs. 40000 monthly
Hi Govind, Welcome to Japan.
ReplyDeleteHope you have gone through the above post and the comments to reach to a conclusion on the expenses in Tokyo. After all it depends on how much you want to spend and on which items you may restrict yourself. With the current exchange rates of 1.53 Yen per 1 INR, you need to save around 62,000 JPY a month to save 40,000 INR. Then you need to restrict your expenses to 63,000 JPY.
All

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am considering applying for a position at a Japanese company (on campus) where my salary will be 265000 Yn a month plus annual bonus of between 1.2-1.4 mn Yn. I am single and dnt mind sharing a bachelor accommodation. Not yet sure whether company will be providing me with acco. Need to go to the Shiodome City Centre for work so will choose a place accordingly. With tax and evrything else thrown in, can you tell me how much I would be able to save annually (assume slightly above average lifestyle) a.) with company acco in Tokyo b.) without company acco in Tokyo c.) outside Tokyo in places like Nagoya, Osaka etc without company acco. I knw this is a lot of info, but I really cnt make out if the salary is viable and how to compare it against other offers. Thanks a lot!
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteGood to see that you have provided so much valuable information. Appreciate!! Need a piece of advice. I am offered JPY 5,000,000 / Per Year. Till now i don't had any discussion about perks, if any. I am an Indian currently working in Malaysia. Do you think the offered salary is ok to save somewhere between 1.5-2L INR per annum?
Hi Starvoyager,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Tokyo. Recently I have written about the percentage of savings one can expect in different conditions. Please go through it.
http://www.mylifeinjapanjp.com/2011/12/what-percentage-of-salary-foreigner-can.html
By the way, it is practically very expensive to work in Tokyo and live in Osaka or Nagoya. These places are far away from Tokyo for daily commutation. If company provides accommodation, you can save around 2.6 million in a year including your bonus considering slightly above average lifestyle.
Hi Rahul,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Tokyo. You may discuss about perks including accommodation, travel, bonus, return air ticket to India once a year and other applicable things as per company rules. Get clarified about everything before you sign the contract.
Regarding savings I suggest you to go through my recent post on savings; http://www.mylifeinjapanjp.com/2011/12/what-percentage-of-salary-foreigner-can.html
If you are a bachelor, you can save around 30%, provided accommodation is provided.
Good luck!
Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for ur reply. I went through the post about savings and it was very helpful. Also, when I asked abt other places like Osaka, I did not mean I would commute from there. I just meant that there is a strong possibility that after the first 3-6 months of induction and training, the company would post me in an office or plant outside of Tokyo (in Osaka etc), so those figures may be more relevant. In any case I assume they would be less expensive than Tokyo, but any idea by how much? TIA!
Hi Jay
ReplyDeleteI have been offered a position with a Japanese Company in Tokyo with a monthly salary of 252000 JPY. The company is taking care of the major part of the accomodation. I have to pay only 7000 YEN for the same. Company is taking care of the transportation costs as well.I drink occasionally and not much travelling is involved. I will be cooking at home for one meal and taking one at a restaurant. How much do you think i can save??
Dear Jayprakash,
ReplyDeleteThis is a fantastic place to get all the information on japan...Thanks for sharing all the information!
I have been offered by my company to move to Japan.. they are offering me 350000 Yen Net salary (after taxes), the company is taking care of the entire accommodation along with utilities payment(max limit is 500000 Yen/month for the housing+utilities)also all the schooling fees for my 1 child are borne by the company, also some part of the salary is being paid back in india also.
What is your feedback on this offer....?
Hi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteYou must be saving around 150,000 JPY per month on an average. Welcome to Japan!
Hi Anonymous (on Jan 16),
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan. Congrats to your assignment. This offer is good, considering school fee paid by the company. Accommodation in Tokyo is high, but if you stay near to the Indian schools, you may get a 2LDK room for around 120,000 JPY per month. This may be higher if it is a private apartment and slightly lower if it is UR apartment. Utility bills vary according to the season. For example in my case, the gas bill used to be around 4000 JPY per month, but during winter season it goes high as my apartment has gas heating system. Last month I got a bill of 17804 JPY and was little bit disappointed!!!.
Any way your company supports many of your expenses. Did they talk about Bonus and annual vacation package?
Dear Joyaprakash,
ReplyDeleteI will have a possibility to be a researcher in Japan. Tokyo.
I would like to know if you think that 1.000.000 yen for 6 month for a single person is ok for covering living expenses(accomodation+food+travel expenses+ other expenses).
Thank you very much,
A.
Hi Jayaprakash
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot firstly for providing such vital information in your blog
I would be going for a 1 year project in Tokyo,Japan along-with my wife.
The company is providing us accommodation and will also take care of transportation costs. Will really like to know a projection of our expenses if we take lunch outside and say cook dinner at home.
Your reply in this regards will be really helpful for us to plan our savings.
Hi Jayapraksh,
ReplyDeleteI am offered a job Yokohama. They are paying me 23 USD per hour plus accomodation plus 2100 JPY daily allowance for food. Nothing for family except accomodation. What are the normal working hours there and how much i can save there from this package? Annual vacation ticket with unpaide 17 days leave.
Pls guide me
Regards,
Mohan
Hi JP,
ReplyDeleteI have been following your post pretty regularly and i kinda find it quite useful. I am planning to relocate to Japan and i want to learn more abt the accomodation.
I am planning to go for a private apartment preferably 1LDK, can you tell me and approximate range i can get a 1LDK and in what area.
Coud also suggest a few agents or names or links whom i can get in touch with to arrange for my longterm accomodation.
Any other suggestion you can give for house hunting would be much appreciated. My budget on accomodation is around 100,000 Yen to 150,000 yen. Can i get a 1LDK in this much and where?
Hello Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteMy company has offered me a deal of 8m per year. After all taxes i calculated i'll have a monthly salary of 450000 yen per month. Health insurance is provided by the company. I will have to rent an apartment on my own though, the company will take care of the key money and agent fee. So do you think this salary will be able to sustain 2 person and be still be able to save something?
Dear Anonymous researcher,
ReplyDelete1000,000 JPY for 6 months is not enough as per my experience to cover accommodation, travel, food and other expenses). If some local people or your sponsor company/institution can guide you to find cheaper accommodation and food options, it is possible.
Best of luck for your new assignment!
Hi Anonymous on Jan 27,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan and congrats to your new assignment.
Japan is a nice place and a majority of Japanese people are helpful.
I think I have answered your doubts in the post above. Any way, for two persons, as the conditions you wrote, it must come in the range of 150,000 JPY/month. Savings depend on how much you get in hand.
Best of luck!
Hi Mohan,
ReplyDeleteCongrats to your new assignment!
Say, you receive 350,000 JPY/month in hand and company takes care of accommodation, with two persons (you and wife) you must save something around 150,000 to 200,000 JPY/month.
Working hours in a typical Japanese firm is 8. You can discuss more details of your working conditions, benefits such bonus, annual package etc, before coming here.
Hi Anonymous on Feb 2.,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan! You can get 1LDK for around 100,000 JPY/month. The location depends on your office location, but many people stay at places from where central Tokyo will be accessible by a train journey of 20-30 minutes. For example, the area I live is along the Shinjuku line.
UR Apartments are a good option if you like to avoid many hassles in getting an accommodation. They welcome foreigners while private apartments will ask for a guarantor to provide house to a foreigner.
I know an Agent of UR apartment, who can manage English and who is good in helping foreign people to get accommodation: Mr. Arakawa. If you want I can give his mobile number.
Regards
JP
Hi Anonymous on Feb 3,
ReplyDeleteYou must be saving around 150,000 to 200,000 JPY per month.
Congrats to you new assignment and welcome to Japan!
Hi Jayaprakash
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be quite a torch bearer here :) Good going and thanks; many of your comments have been quite useful..
I am moving from Delhi to Tokyo and my office will be in Shibuya.. So wanted to check few things:
1) If my budget for rent is around 2L Yens a month; then what kind of accomodation I can expect? My need is that the place should not be more than 15-20 mins from shibuya by train and it should be at least 500 sq feet.. So can this much money suffice that easily? And if yes, then what locations will be ideal?
2) Where do most of the Indians stay there? How far is that from Shibuya?
3) Are houses there earthquake resistant?
4) Any dos and donts before I begin my house hunting?
Cheers
Mrinal
Hi Mrinal,
DeleteCongrats to your new assignment!
1.For 2L per month you must get a 500 sq.ft apartment near to Shibuya itself. Ask your employer to help finding a suitable real estate agent. If foreigners search the apartment alone in Japan, UR apartments are the best as they do not ask for a guarantor.
2. Most Indians live in Kasai, Nishi Kasai area which are in the Tozai line (train) and Ojima, Nishi Ojima, Higashi Ojima area which are in the Shinjuku line. Travel time to Shibuya is around 37 minutes. There is an Indian school in Nishi Ojima, and the other one is in Mizue, both are accessible from Shinjuku line.
3. As heard from Japanese friends, new buildings are earthquake resistant. Older ones may not.
4. Ask the employer to help for house hunting. If you have children going to school, find an apartment near to the school rather than seeking your own commutation convenience.
Good luck!
Hi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a nice post. It is a must read for first timers to Japan.
I have been asked [by my company] to relocate to Japan. I would be traveling to Tokyo by month-end. I went thru your post and have a few queries.
I have been offered a pay package of 700,000 yens per month [Gross salary]. I would be moving with my wife and son [6 yrs].
1. What is the tax structure. Is it 10% or 30%. got some conflicting information on that.
2. What would be a typical monthly spend.
3. My son would join the elementary school. When does the school session starts. [You had mentioned about your kid being enrolled to elementary school].
Thanks,
Raj.
Hi Raj,
DeleteWelcome to Japan!
1.Tax depends on how much you get. As per your salary it may be around 20%.
2.Typical monthly spend will be around 200,000 Yen except the school fee.
3.School session starts on April. I have two children going to school now, elder one in grade 1 and the younger one in LKG.
Good luck!
Hi Jayaprakash
DeleteThanks for the prompt response.
Any suggestion where to rent a place in Tokyo. As mentioned earlier, I have school going kid. I would prefer to stay near to the school [pref. an India School].
Thanks
Raj.
Hi Raj,
DeleteThere are two Indian schools. India International School in Japan, IISJ is near to Nishi Ojima station (Toei Shinjuku line). Global Indian International school, GIIS is in Shinozaki, also in the Shinjuku line.
Many Indians live in Ojima, Nishi Ojima, Higashi Ojima area for easy access to the Indian schools.
Hi Jayaprakash, your blog is really nice .. Thanks for info
ReplyDeleteThanks!
DeleteHi JP , Recently I got offer from one Japanese company and they are offering me about 250,000yen after deduction of all taxes. Besides this they are offering me accommodation and travelling expenses from home to office. I am planning to reach there with my wife and one 8 months old child. How much amount can be saved , if we cook at home and live a normal life there. 60,000 yen/month are enough for food ?
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan!
DeleteThat amount should be fine for food only. There will be other expenses such as utility bills, extra travels.
Recently I have written a post on the percentage of savings for various scenarios. Please go through it.
Good luck!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am looking for accommodation in Tokyo for six months (April-September). Could anybody please help me to find a room or shared apartment?
My work place is in Frontier Koishikawa Bldg and is 6 minutes walk on Hakusan-dori Ave.
Many Thanks
akki
HI Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteDo you know which is the best maternity clinic in Nishi Kasai area?
Thanks for your reply JP
ReplyDeleteFor utilities I am getting 10,000 yen/month extra.
I understand from your reply that 60,000 yen /month is enough for food for two person. As I wrote , I getting accommodation facilities and travelling facilities from home to office. I want to save at least 75000 to 80000 INR per month. My Basic salary is about 250,000 yen/month (excluding all taxes)including overtime allowance. Bonus amount is very less ( about 0.5-0.6% of one month gross). Is it possible to save that much amount if we cook at home and travel once in a month inside japan?
I'll be located at Yokohama. Hows that place for indians ? I heard that there are some amount offered by Japanese government for child of age less than 2 year (my child is 8 months old) for tax payee employee. do you have any idea for this ?
And once again thanks for your such a nice Support :)
Regards
Hari Om
Hi Hari, the percentage of savings is in your hand - means it depends on how you live. For saving 80,000 JPY per month, you need to restrict the expenses within 120,000 JPY per month, which will be too tough considering the living styles in Tokyo with family. You may be able to save around 60,000 INR per month on a average in a year. Children less than 3 years old will receive 15,000 JPY per month from the ward office. This will be paid in three installments in a year - after every four months.
DeleteYour post for percentage of saving for various scenarios is also very informative ..Thanks
ReplyDeleteMY SON WILL BE JOINING A JAPANESE COMPANY, WORKS APPLICATION THIS YEAR.I FIND YOUR BLOG VERY INFORMATIVE.LET ME KNOW HOW I CAN GET CONTACT DETAILS OF ATLEAST A FEW CANDIDATES WHO ARE SELECTED FOR JOB IN THE SAME OFFICE, THE PURPOSE BEING TO DISCUSS AND PLAN TO STAY IN THE SAME AREA, MAY/MAY NOT BE ON SHARING BASIS.
ReplyDeleteTHANKS.
Hello Mr. Mishti, Please contact the HR division of the company and explain the reason. They will assist to find accommodation.
DeleteHi JP,
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you updating the thread regularly and helping so many ppls.Really a good cause you are following.
I have been offered around 2,40,000 YEN for two adult and 2 kids(one school kid).
It includes fully furnished accomodation (including utility bills),school expenses for kid, commuting charges, medical insurance, all taxes paid.
Questions:
1.Do you give a THUMPS UP for this offer if saving is in my mind????
2.Also heard some amount paid for kids by GOVT, HOW MUCH?
3.Are INDIAN Schools affiliated with CBSE pattern?
4.Is Tokyo is safe for Indian in term of crime ratio(Hope not like AUSTRALIA)?
5.Heard that JAPANese people are bad in ENGLISH, True?
6.Is LANGUAGE problem is BIG problem in TOKYO for INDIANS?
Again thanks for your help!
Congrats and welcome to Japan. 240,000 JPY may be the monthly expenses on an average as per my experience, not including the school fee. If company pays utility bills, the expense may be 160,000 to 200,000. Why don't you negotiate for more.
Delete1. Frankly, I am doubtful if you have savings in mind.
2. Children below 3 years will get 15,000 JPY per month and above 3 will receive 10,000 JPY. Please check with ward office after coming here for the latest rules.
3. Indian schools are affiliated with CBSE.
4. Tokyo is safe for Indians.
5. All are not bad, as is in our own country.
6. Lived in Tokyo for the first one year without knowing Japanese language. Some of my friends have been here for more than 6 years without knowing even basic Japanese language.
Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteGreetings!
I'm 27 years old management consultant with 5 years of experience. I've been offered a job of Consultant by a mid-level Japanese consulting company in Tokyo. They are offering me JPY 5400000 per annum gross salary. Apart from that they are also paying me accommodation, commuting expenses, Insurance coverage and 2 times to-and-fro travel expenses to India. They have not informed me about any bonus structure in the company, and I don't think they will offer that to me.
I'm a vegetarian and teetotaler, do you think this is a good offer to go for. Also with this package, how much would I be able to save.
Regards,
Prakhar
Congrats Prakhar. This should be a good offer considering your experience. Think you are a bachelor.
DeleteThanks Jayaprakash,
DeleteYes, I'm bachelor. What do you think, how much which will I be able to save?
Hello Jayaprakash!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I have the same questions as everyone before me with my specific situation.
I was offered a post doc at a government organisation in Tokyo(Hongo sanchome area) with 5,000,000 jpy gross per year. My questions are as follows:
1. Do you consider this an average, low or high pay for this kind of position?
2. How much will this be net per month?
3. I wish to live close to work (up to 20minutes) in a private apartment (maybe Iidabashi area). What would be the best price I could get for this kind of an apartment?
4. I have heard that there is a chance that government pays will be lowered due to the bad economic situation. Do you have any information about that? How much would it be?
5. If wish to live decent life (nothing fancy though), going out 2 to 3 times per week, can I expect to save any money?
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteI'm 21 & currently living in New Delhi,
Well I have been offered a job in a japanese apparel company UNIQLO with a compensation of 210000 ¥ /month including 100% accommodation (can this % be possible or i would be paying something minimum) , transportation & 70% of medical & dental insurance, 2 bonuses and 4 day home leave with a return air ticket.
I'll be moving to Tokyo!!
My questions are:
1.) Is this offer good enough to accept? I mean can I survive in tokyo with this package and save something as well for my family?
2.)what type of taxes & hidden charges of any kind I would need to pay in tokyo (as per your experience)
3.) How do japanese treat indians at workplace or otherwise?? Are they biased when it comes to promotions?
4.) What are the most important rules & laws of Govt of Japan comes to your mind which an indian national should be aware of??
5.) & lastly How many years would it take me to obtain Japanese nationality if I were to stay there for a long time!!
Jay u r doing a fantastic job!! It is very difficult to relocate yourself in a different country all of a sudden and at such crucial time if someone from your own country is there to help you out, it feels great!! Keep up the good work !!
Thanks a lot in advance:-)
hello,
ReplyDeleteI live in australia, and I'm trying to land myself a job and move to japan. I'm int he process of getting student visa... any advice ..
everyone seems to have landed a job already... I find it impossible no matter how many agencies I call up... what is the difference I wonder.
Thanks
Japanese language proficiency makes big difference if we search for a job in Japan. If the company search for a foreigner, Japanese language proficiency will not be counted.

DeleteHello Jay,
ReplyDeleteI am currently studying in Singapore (NTU). I have the opportunity to do an exchange program at Waseda University (6 months). My budget is 2000USD per month. Do u think I can make it? I want to stay close to shinjuku and be able to have fun and go out.
ps: my girlfriend will come as well. She will have some 1000usd extra. Do u know if is normal to rent a room to a couple? (Chilean-American)
Cheers,
Thanks bro, your blog was very helpful.
Hi Guille, Your budget should be OK for a limited fun in Tokyo. Apartments are available for different monthly rental charges. You need to choose one suitable for your convenience and budget.
DeleteBest of luck!
Hello Jay,
ReplyDeleteFirstly I must say that this is an amazing blog.
I really need help, I am a software engineer with about 8 years of experience.
I have been working on Mainframe technologies for Banking software.
I am going thru the interview process for on of the Banks in Japan in their software department.
I am married, Once selected I will be shifting with wife and an kid (2 months).
What are the living expenses in Japan, should I also ask the company to pay for accommodation, transport, medical?
I want to know what is the salary that I should ask/expect.
Here in India after living expenses i save easily about 80/90K.
How much do you think I can end up saving per month, normal lifestyle with some travelling and eating out may be weekly once.
I am worried about asking too less or too much compensation :(.
Hi Suyog,
DeleteProfessionals in banking software has one of the highest earning potentials. Let us be practical. Considering your current savings in India say around 10 lakh rupees per annum, you must aim for at least 4 times savings while shifting to Japan. This is purely my personal opinion and if I were in your shoes I would consider 4 times or more savings than the current one.
I am just giving you an idea. Ultimately the decision is yours and it depends on many factors such as your expectation, companies offer, their salary structure etc. In your situation, you can expect to save around 30% of your gross salary. Now you can calculate based on this and above saving expectation.
You may ask for accommodation, transportation, medical, bonus, annual ticket for family, school education support if required (may not be applicable right now).
To be frank Suyog, it is hard for me to tell you the exact amount, but remember that your job could fetch high salary in Japan. So first let them offer the salary, then with patience you can negotiate for higher if it is not up to your expectation. Keep cool. You already have a wonderful job in hand. Many times silence for a while would prove to be good strategy especially in situations where we feel will end up asking too less than we deserve. Let them play their card.
Good luck. If you have anything more to ask, please...........
Hello Jay,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all would like to thank you for such a nice and informative post.
I am Sikh, Married and have a 3.5 years of son. My husband has got a offer from yokohama based company and i have got a offer from tokyo based company (Nihonbashi Muromachi Nomura Building, 4-3, Nihonbashi-muromachi 2-chome, Chuo-ku, Tokyo - Shinsei Bank) via singapore based company. They have offered me 90000 sgd per annum plus 60 USD per calender day as allowance. I have few questions about Japan:
1) Are there good Indain schools in yokohama
2) is it feasible to travel between yokohama and tokyo daily
3) any idea about good daycares in yokohama
4) whether i will be able to save considering my single salary for all expenses
5) any idea about sikh Gurudwaras in yokohama
once again thank you for all the information shared

Gagan
Hi Gagan,
DeleteGood to know your new offers.
1. There is an Indian school in Yokohama (IISJ - India international school in Japan, Yokohama campus)
2. There are many people in office coming from Yokohama and far away places daily. There are frequent trains.
3. Of course available in Japanese, but I must check for foreigners
4. You can save some percentage, but it depends on what other facilities your company offers such as house rent, bonus, annual vacation package, medical, transportation, etc.
5. There is one in Tokyo, Bunkyo-ku, Otsuka. 45 minutes travel from Yokohama.
Best of luck!
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for that information.
Your blog has given me good idea about how i should move ahead.
Once things start finalizing I will probably contact you again.
Again, thanks a lot. You are doing a wonderful job and I am sure this is helping hundreds.
Best Wishes,
Suyog

DeleteWelcome to Japan!
Could you please check the post: http://www.mylifeinjapanjp.com/2011/12/what-percentage-of-salary-foreigner-can.html
I have given some indications on savings for different situations based on some assumptions. As per your inputs, it seems you might be able to save around 20-25%.

Sudheer
Hi Sudheer,
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Japan!
1. Apartment rent may vary from 80,000 to 120,000 per month.
2. Yes, IISJ Yokohama campus
3. Normally company should take care of medical insurance
4. IISJ annual fee is 600,000 JPY + 150,000 JPY for transportation
5. Just count 22% of your gross salary as your savings.
6. depends on individuals. roughly 160,000 JPY per month.
8. can rent a flat in Yokohama with the help of your company initially.
If the offer is 8000USD before tax and if your current monthly savings is 5000USD, you don't need to accept this offer. What you think?

Hello Jay
ReplyDeleteGreat blog!
I have a job offer of (after negotiation)5,25,000 yen / month. Overtime on weekends if done will be compensated according to the law of the land. I have to pay taxes, insurance and health care. I will have to arrange for my own accommodation. If not, then the company will deduct 150000 yen from my monthly salary. 1 return ticket for me and my wife and to be born child to India every year will be paid by the company. I will be living in Kanagawa, Yokohama.
I have a total expense of Rs 70K/month in India (25k EMI + policies + saving (Recurring deposits, PPF, taking care of parents, etc) Do you think taking this job would be financially beneficial for me?
Saving Rs.50K/month or more than what I save now might make sense to me.
I have 8 years of software development experience and I am 30 years old.
Do you thing this is a good offer?
Thankx
Amod
Hi Amod, Hope you have gone through the kind of expenses in Japan mentioned in this blog and other sites. You may be able to save the amount that you mentioned in your comments. Generally expatriates save a lot more than the locals by putting restrictions on themselves. Usually married people with a kid not going to school saves around 25% of their salary.
DeleteGood luck!
Hi Jay,
DeleteThanks a lot for taking time to reply. Appreciate!
Hope we get time sometime to catch up.
Cheers Mate!

Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteI am being considered for a job in japan and the monthly salary they are offering me comes to around 280,000 JPY. I am a 22 year old engineering student ,not married. Do you think this much will be enough for me.
I have read your earlier posts but they are as per 2009 standards..since its 2012 now..please guide me accordingly. Please inform me soon as my interview is in a couple of days
Thank you,
Divyesh
Most commonly this is the starting structure for locals when they join in a company. You must negotiate for other benefits such as bonus, vacation tickets, commuting allowance, insurance etc.
DeleteHi Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteI am a fresh graduate and have been offered a job @ Nagasaki Japan. How much amount would be necessary for a decent life there.
Thxs
RK
hi jayaprakash,
ReplyDeletevery informative and helpful blog..
i am abhijeet, i received offer from mitsubishi japan. they are providing 280000 JPY per month. i am 23 year old, not married. company will provide dormitories. posting will be in nagasaki or takasago, which place would be good and less expensive ?? what would be the monthly expenses in both the cities. plz reply asap..
thanx,
Abhijeet
Hi Abhijeet, congrats to your new assignment and welcome to Japan. Once you come to Japan, you will realize such comparisons on places are not so important. What matters is your working environment, how long you stay with your employers, your colleagues and salary. Living in Japan is costly, but remember we are paying for the quality of life, whether it is Nagasaki or Takasago. We can save in Tokyo too, if we control the expenses. Once you are in Japan you will learn how to control and where to spend. Good luck!
DeleteHi Jayaprakash,
DeleteI have read almost all your Blogs and it make me understand about day to day expenses but i feel your blogs is quite old, Could you please recent rate i have got a offer from Tokyo and My salary is 260000 Yen per month and apart from that comapny is provided me the accomadation and travel ticket cost will get reimburse after a month and Airfare ticket once in a year, I just want to know whether offer is good or not, Should i accept this offer? Need your reply urgently
And I want to know how much i can save in a month after the expenses like Internet, Gasbill and food( Sometime outside and most of the time i cook at home)
Hi, With the current expenses, I feel, you may save something around 100,000 Yen per month. This is just my estimation based on my experience.
DeleteHI Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your quick response, I am coming to tokyo by next month, Can you tell me how much i have to spend for calling india atleast one hour per day on phone and how much i have to pay for internet (Any type) and what about the charges for northindian food (Like Flour, Rice Dal)Just want to know whether these things are available there or not
If you take internet connection, you can use skype for free call. Use VoIP, which is cheaper. Some of my friends use this method. I pay a total of 5360 Yen per month for a 100 Mbps internet connection and land phone connection from Yahoo BB. I need to spend 2400 Yen to buy calling card which can be used for around 28 hours to a mobile phone in India.
DeleteOnce you come to Tokyo, you will find many stores selling Indian food items. Can not compare the price of those items in India and in Tokyo.
and one more thing, I am having 6 years of exp and I am getting 70000 takehome salary in bangalore, I am not able to decide whether offer is good or not, Your quick response would be appreciated, My name is Ankit
ReplyDeleteShow your cards to them and negotiate for higher salary. Not worth if your home-take is INR 70,000 now and you save 100,000 Yen. Only worth if you want to add "Japanese experience" to your resume, which will give you more stars for future.
DeleteHi Jayprakash,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I would like to thanks for all your help, I am negotiating with the company for some more salary, but they are ready to give some 30000 salary in Indian currency every month apart from 260000 yen in Japan.
Just want to know whether offer is worth or not?
You are welcome Ankit.
ReplyDeleteAs a bachelor, an offer of 260,000 Yen + 30,000 INR may look attractive, but be informed that this is not a very good offer. Once you start family life, you need more money to live in Japan.
Generally Japanese companies give bonus which is distributed in June and December every year. You can ask for that condition also.
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteThanks again, I will talk to them and let you know on Monday.
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteYour blog is really informative.
I have been offered a gross pay of 725000 Yen per month. I would have to pay all the taxes + insurances. Could you please advise how much would be deducted as my income-tax and insurance?
Also, can you share the possible deduction that I can claim to reduce my income tax outgo.
I have a dependent wife who would be staying with me and my parents back in India are also dependent on me.
Please can you share other possible deductions that I can be eligible to claim.
Thanks in advance
HI Jay,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the late reply, I talked to them but they are not ready to increase the salary part and no bonus concept. But they mentioned that once you complete one year, They will provide a good hike. and If you learn Japanese also automatically your salary will increase.
I am confused whether to accept this offer or leave and continue working in Bangalore?
How much time take to lean Japanese? Is it a toughest language? Will I survive if i learn little Japanese like Normal Talk, Because i went through some articles and i feel its quite difficult to learn Japanese.
Need your advice
If you are committed to your study, you may complete it in two years time to reach to a considerably higher level.
DeleteHi Jayprakash,
DeleteYour blog is very nice. My husband has got a job offer in Tokyo. We have two kids, 3.5 yr old and 5 month old. Wanted to check with you the average monthly expenses for a family of four including accommodation, transport, groceries, medical, schooling and daycare for the little one.
Also I am a primary school teacher in Gurgaon, what are the chances of getting a teaching job for myself and how much do the schools pay there?
Your advice will be highly appreciated
Thanks
Hi Anonymous, Consider the expenses to be around 350,000 JPY/month for a family of 4, one child going to school and one not going to school. You need to add house rent which will be around 120,000-150,000 JPY per month. So, you may need something around 500,000 JPY per month.
DeleteMedical must be covered by your husband's company (or the insurance if your period of stay is more than one year). Transportation depends on your choice of travel. You will get a job. Don't worry about that. Schools may not pay much, but may be enough to cover the school fee for two children. Better than nothing, if you take things positively.
Anyway, Welcome to Tokyo!
Hi Jay,
ReplyDeleteAppreciate your continual support to the Indian community through your blog. I was in Yokohama during 2009 time. Appreciate if you could share if things have improved on a typical Indian perspective from 2009!!, mainly cultural events, Bollywood movies and food (Indian stores, restaurants, vegetables etc..). We had a tough time finding good food items for cooking, Indian stores were far off; and obviously the choice of vegetables in malls were very limited..I'm negotiating an offer with a Japanese firm to be staying near IIS and work in Chiba.
The toughest part is to convince your family. Trust the effect of Fukushima is long gone and there are a lot of Indian families hanging around Tokyo comfortably..
HI What is the general OT(over time) rule in Japan?? I am offered a decent package but they say it might be required to work on OT and OT shall be chargeable only from 40 hrs onwards.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back to Tokyo!
DeleteNow the situation is better than before. You will find many Indian shops. It is individual's choice whether to believe in God or Fukushima! If I believe that I will not die if do not live in Japan, probably people do not need to search for a bigger ignorant person than me.
I have never heard of any such overtime rules in Japan. In fact what I have heard is; Overtime hours shall not cross more than 40 hours or something, so that companies can limit the payment. Check with your employer once again.
HI Jay,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your fast response and happy to hear the situation is better now. I agree with you on fukushima, but as I mentioned, the toughest part is to convince your family, not urself. Being in Oil&Gas I've been to many unsafe places and japan is one of the finest places I can think of and need to do a bit of planning in this regard.
reg OT, what I said was right and the billable OT starts from 40 hrs onwards only. The company says it has been like a culture now developing with expat engineers (mostly Indians) to stretch the work and claim OT unreasonably. Will keep you posted; Thank you once again..
Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteThank you for breaking down the cost of living in Japan!
Do you know where I can find a salary range in Japan for an international scientist with a PhD or MD degree (from a first-tier university in USA)? I'd like to know the highest possible salary (that may be out of the norm but not totally unreasonable).
In the USA, a computer scientist could make anywhere between $80,000 to $120,000 PER YEAR with MS degree (no industrial experience), whereas a fresh PhD can make more than $150,000. These numbers are definitely on the high side, but are indeed real-world salaries. The salary in other technical fields is generally lower than computer/software related fields, but still considerably competitive; for example, one can make up to $100,000+ PER YEAR with a PhD or MD alone (without industrial experience). I wonder if the salary in Japan is competitive to USA (esp. considering the high cost of living). I am thinking from a recruiting point of view.
I have read that seniority and age are significant factors in Japan. If this is truly the case, how do Japanese companies recruit top students who can get a high salary in the USA after college / graduate school?
Thanks for your insight.
Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteI have been given a budget for housing (2000usd per month)and assue that this is good enough for a family of 3, please confirm.
Any tips on good housing agents who get me a appartmnet in this area: Shiba
Minato-ku, Tokyo?
Thanks in advance for the help
For USD2000 per month, I think you may get a 2LDK in Minato-ku. If you do not mind to travel approx. 30 minutes by train, you will get more spacious apartments for this rent. Ask your employer to suggest suitable agents. Generally they must help you sign the contracts. Good luck!
DeleteHi Jay,
ReplyDeleteI am Dr. Durai, I am received an offer from University of Tokyo to work as a postdoctoral researcher. My work place will be Shirokanedai, Minato-ku Area.
My monthly salary will be 3333 Euros (471,336JPY). I will bring my wife along with me. Can you suggest me monthly expense for two. Also can you suggest me some areas in tokyo where the rent would be cheaper that you mentioned before. I am ready for 1 hr daily travel to reach my work place. Please suggest me the possibility I will be happy if you drop your mail to durai8485@gmail.com. Thanking you
Hello sir, can you please give me an idea if my blackberry torch (9800) would work in Japan. Thanks a lot...
ReplyDeleteNTT Docomo offers Blackberry in Japan, but a handset brought from outside may not work. Mobile operators make money by giving handset and monthly charges as a total package here in Japan. They do not want any body to bring handset from outside Japan.
DeleteHi, wanted to ask one thing my salary is 228500 yen pr month and i am getting home from my office only, if i remove this that home cost which would be around 3200 yen or less as per my office norms. Then what will be my monthly expenses living in tokyo.
ReplyDeleteIncluding my electricity bill, water bill, phone bills, gas bills, and what all type of taxes and insurence are to be paid. What are the call rates for INDIA

Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDelete1. What is the Income Tax % in Japan on overall gross salary
2. Rent for a single occupant with kitchen, looking where Indians are around
3. Avg Monthly expenses for a single person(including travel/mobile/gas/elec/water, consider everything)

DeleteDear Jayaprakash,
DeleteYou blog is really very informative and give complete idea about possible range of expenditure in Japan, This is indeed a noble job. Your precious time & effort is commendable it settles out many bubbles anyone have when one gets a job offer from Japan.
May I request you to give suggestions/opinions on some of my queries. How comfortable is local commutation – is it crowded like Mumbai Local? How is Indian culture near Edogava – you have already mentioned that Indian stores are available, indian families, society/club/gathering are there. How active are they? Whether they socialize to each other or people are busy in their respective job?
I am having 9 years of experience after my engineering and one organization is offering 1) 400,000 Yen per month after tax plus 2) Accommodation, 3) Company Pension Plan, 4) 2-Round trip Ticket to India, 5) Medical coverage for Family, 6) Commutation Allowance. However, there will be no annual bonus. I have a 2.5 years kid & he will start pre-school. Company will be providing accommodation near Indian School but I may require to travel for 25 km or more but its good that my child will be near house.
Could you please also tell me possible range of expenses on below headers.
Yen / month
1 Food + household for 2 Adults & 1 Kid
2 Utility bills Electricity, Water, Gas
3 Internet + TV
4 Mobile

I have got a job in SMK-Tokyo, my salary is 230500 yen per month and the accomadtion charge is 30,000 yen i wanted to know what will actual expense their and how much i can save i am single not married.
Dear Jayaprakash, there is a job offer at Tokyo where one can stay in Siatama or any other plances near Kawagoe which is best for staying. I have a Family with 2 kids going to school in India and I want them to shift along with me. Can you please confirm me what is the average salary required to live a confortable life in Japan. We shall presume company will not provide the accommodation, transport and kids education fee. Accordingly you may suggest us considering th general cost of living including eating outside atleast once a week, remaining days cooking at home preferable vegetarian food. Hope you understand what I am referring. I should get benifitted by shifting to new loaction considering the additional costs involved. Currently Indian CTC is about 25lac, and what should be my expectation if I move along with family to japan and kids needs to be admitted to international schools..... Pl help me in demanding the offers.... Vijay

Hi JP,
ReplyDeleteI am offered with a 2 yrs of postdoc poistion in Tokyo Denki University near Kitasenju station. The monthly gross salary is 360,000 yen. No accommodation, transportation and other facilities. I am a married and planning to bring my wife in Tokyo. We are also planning to have our first baby, probably in Tokyo in the next year. Do you think, the monthly salary of 360,000 yen is enough for us if we live quite far from the center, for example near Kita Senju? Is it possible to save some money out of that salary if we live a very simple lifestyle?
Thank you !

Dear Mr. Jayaprakash, I am planning to do M.Sc or PhD in Tokyo Institute of Technology. I have not found any clear details on teaching aspects in Japanese Universities. Will it be rigorous or self-study based? Also kindly let me know about the survivability with the scholarship in Tokyo. The campus would be in Ookayama. Is it possible to save money as a student, which is normally possible in Europe and USA? Thanks.

Dear Jayaprakash,
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you very much for this blog.. its very
helpful.
I am a structural engineer with 8 years experience. I
recently I got an offer from Japanese company
located in Tokyo. They are offering me 3,90,000 yen
per month. (under negotiation)
Company will not pay for accommodation. But they
are paying for local commutation & air tickets.
Also I have two choices of cities they have offered ,
one is Tokyo & second is Yokohama.
I will be staying with my family (wife & 1 yr old kid) .
I am little confused whether in this salary will I be
able to save INR 1,00,000 per month which is my
least target.
Or should I ask for some more? If yes, Could you
guide me on this?
Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks,
Ravi

Living for family of 4 ~ 300000 Yen
Please advise if i have under estimated any expense.
